It had to happen sooner or later: I forgot to book in the shopping delivery. Logging into our supermarket of choice on Saturday to add some things to the basket, I found that the expected Wednesday slot wasn't actually secured, and the next I could get was the following Tuesday. Oops.
Managing the extra 6 days from the freezer and store cupboard wouldn't have been entirely impossible for the two of us, but it would have been a bit of a stretch and rather dull. So I took the opportunity to put in an order with Kale and Damson, a local catering supplier who've branched out to home delivery in These Unprecedented Times. (Liz, if you're reading, I should have asked you if you wanted anything, but I was in a bit of a flap and forgot.)
The selection is broad (meat - fish - dairy - veg - bakery - etc) but a little random in content and quantity. But it has the sort of veg that doesn't crop up so often in the supermarket: funny cabbage, kohlrabi, and -- Lord be praised -- beetroot with its leaves on. We used to go to a local farmers' market often enough precisely to buy weird seasonal veg, and I haven't 'alf missed it.
Lunch yesterday was beetroot-top soup, which goes thusly...
- Chop a leek (or onion) and the tops off the beetroot.
- Wash the mud off them.
- Simmer the veg with a stock cube of choice, garlic clove or three and a piece of lemon rind.
- Once it's nicely soft (10-15 minutes), blend it up.
- Serve in this case with yoghurt and the chopped up ends of an ancient cucumber.
- Marvel at how the kitchen smells of The Before.
- Eat.

That looks pretty!
ReplyDeleteYou can rely on beetroot for a beautiful meal!
DeleteThis sounds like a really satisfactory way of wrangling the delivery crisis. Even if their stuff is a bit patchy, how great to get some seasonal things you've not been able to have since this all began.
ReplyDeleteQuite. And now I have a kilo of chicory to play with, too.
DeleteI’m appreciating the plate too. :-)
ReplyDelete:) One of the last survivors from the set of plates, bowls and mugs I took away to university many years ago.
