This is our 21st Saturday since All This began. And I'm back on my sofa, last week's sudden social life having withered away through heat and stress and everyone agreeing to take it slowly. It's undoubtedly the mature thing to do. I'm seeing friends at a gallery next Sunday, which will be two weeks since my last foray Outside - if I got covid from the last one, I should know it or be over it by next weekend. Isn't it a jolly set of calculations?
But meanwhile, southern England is sweltering, and I've used all my emotional strength on the cricket. But England have won the most unlikely of matches, and I'm so, so grateful there is cricket again. (Though also, and not unconnected, anxious indigestion.)
And for company, I've cracked open the Hugo Spritz. A poor also-ran in our cocktail voting stakes, but a strong recommendation for August. I had it first in Berlin (mandatory sigh), where I might have been next week I think if a hugely speculative conference round-table had been accepted. Hey ho. It's probably boiling there, and I'd just have slunk around lecture theatres in the Freie Universitaet and-
Woe.
But a Hugo is very doable at home: elderflower cordial, mint, lime [or lemon, here], a splash of soda or plain water to dilute, then top up with prosecco and ice. The lime gives it an edge to ward off too much sweetness, but anyone who struggles with bitters will prefer this kind of spritz.
I shall be on twitter at 7pm BST for anyone who cares to cheers. And to boggle. 21 weeks, lads. 21 weeks. Mind you, it does clash with the cricket highlights.
I might ask what you've been distracting yourselves with lately. Not improving projects, but stuff that passes the time and switches your brain off virus planning/fretting. I think we could all do with some of that.
My other half has been glued to his tablet and the cricket since he got up this morning. I knew it must be going well from the fact that I hadn't heard any noise coming from the kitchen!
ReplyDeleteI was just speaking to an old colleague in Brighton on Skype who I haven't seen/spoken to since we left Blighty again in 2015. She said they were melting down there, but it was brilliant to catch up. Note to self, we shouldn't leave it another five years!
Enjoy your Hugo Spritz. I don't have any Elderflower Cordial, but I do have prosecco and cassis, so I think my pre-dinner, when I get there might include a Kir Royale, which would be quite jolly.
For now, I'm going to attempt to make scones for the first time, so will possibly do an entry on that for tomorrow.
Have a good rest of weekend and I hope the next week treats you kindly.
Sharon :)
Mmm, a Kir Royale sounds glorious. I hope your scones went well.
DeleteOne good thing has definitely been reaching out to people after gaps in contact. Covid is definitely a reason to check in and say hello, now we know how much it means to us all to make contact.
