Give us a snap

I really need a bit of a lift. It's been bright and sunny today, excitingly snowy yesterday, you'd think I'd feel perkier. But it's a funny thing, lockdown mood. I am very flat and down this week, in spite of having genuine things to look foward to (wine tasting! book launch! yoga workshop! livestream improv!), at a rate that's much closer to my pre-pandemic life than usual. Don't know why, specifically. It's just the usual blah of long lockdowns, lack of hope that things will get back to normal anytime soon, hearty disinclination to walk the same streets again and again. Etc.

My walk yesterday definitely lifted the glums

What today really, really needed was a big pile of beige.

Ahahaha, nope. But that's what it got. Tahini-baked chicken, from Home Cookery Year, which is just hilariously beige on beige on endless beige.

Marinated baked chicken thighs - marinade is mainly tahini, lemon, paprika and cumin, yay. Still beige.

Roasted garlic cloves and spring onions - thus turning the spring onion pale and bland, and the garlic always would be.

Houmous. Crackers. Tahini sauce (more tahini, lemon and water) splodged on top. With parsley for that all-important lift. Tear it all up bitesize and create Beige Mountain.

Thing is, it's very tasty. I will try to frizzle the leftovers more, as this would definitely be better with a little more char, but otherwise, it's a wild success. Lots of layered flavours of lemon and sesame, with the odd pop of roast garlic or onion joy. Real variety in texture too.

Braised courgettes alongside not a bad thing at all, either.

Still, I'm glad afters are pink rhubarb stewed with a bit of orange. If necessary I'll snag some blood oranges for even more vivid colour. I need a little bit of a snap.

  1. Beige definitely doesn't mean bland. That sounds really tasty. And I still like that photo of the Common. :)
