A series of fine messes

I haven't been very bothered about food photography throughout this whole thing. Telling the story and connecting with people is what matters to me. But I can't deny, I've done a whole load of cooking this week that is downright ugly. I have saved it all up for you, aren't you lucky?

Here's a weekend lunch: goat's cheese toasts served with frozen peas warmed through and Little Gem lettuce wilted down over them. One of my favourite things.

Or this: chicken thighs dressed with miso/honey/soy/sherry, with sweet potato wedges and spring onions, and an extra marinade bath at the end just in case anything wasn't already brown and splattery. It was delicious.

Or this: fried eggs fast-frizzled to create crunch, served on pita breads blodged with seasoned yoghurt, with spinach [and yes, more peas, and in fact dill, because not enough spinach], wilted with garlic, ginger and garam masala. More garam sprinkled on top, with some coriander. Goodness, it's a mess. But as a Friday night dinner, it was perfect. (Home Cookery Year strikes again.)

I don't really have a unifying theme here, unless it's to say you're always welcome to post here, even if the photos aren't good, or don't exist. And that I may never have written down mum's rule of delis: Always buy the brown, squashy thing, because it must be tasty - they'd never sell it otherwise. But there's a full meal equivalent: unholy mess in the pan, often pretty good on the tastebuds.

  1. That is a good rule, I’ll remember that one!

  2. I think messy and squishy=tasty is a good rule of thumb.
