I am trying very hard to be okay with the fact it's nearly October. But I think the fact I've set solidly to watching last year's French Bake-off equivalent (which is professional, regional, and brilliant, and includes a category for produit fetiche which I still can't believe is its actual name), and starting wistfully with the southern half of the map suggests I'd rather be somewhere else.
But I do still have a summer product on the go. I mentioned fig leaf wine at Cocktail Hour a while back. (I got the recipe off Diana Henry's insta years ago, but this one should work.)
Parental fig leaf donation (easier than theft from street corners)
Wine, sugar, vodka, leaves...
take the picture before you shake it or it'll look a bit foggy
And I made it a couple of weeks ago, juuuust remembered to decant it before I went off to Bath, and it's ready to drink. 7 days steeping, and it's pretty strong. So much faster than damson gin. (I have that on the go as well, obvs.)
The one downside? Well, it doesn't look appetising.
However, served very chilled, it is a wonderful resinous aperitif or digestif, despite the hint of uroscopy. I prefer it for after dinner, though I think it's supposed to be pre-dinner drinks. A bit sweet for that for me.
I guess the other downside is I've often made it for Christmas giveaways and this year I'm probably going to have to drink the lot. It gets a bit of sediment after a while, so I'm putting my back into the task... I commend it to you, before the leaves come off entirely, as a warming way of keeping up the summer.
