Nearly an excellent salad

Messing meals up in lockdown* is still more irritating, isn't it? I've messed up lunch for this week. Bother. Mostly, I thought I remembered the recipe for an old favourite salad, ideal for warm weather. And I didn't quite. But then, the shopping issues made it worse. Bah.

The basics are, it's a watermelon salad with green herbs. Coriander, watercress, that sort of deal. You dress it with lime and oil, you use a scatter of chili, sugar and salt over the melon specifically, you have it with cheese and you use tortilla chips for some crunch. It's very, very good.

But. Firstly, you're supposed to use young goat cheese, not feta. I've a fridge full of feta, and I totally forgot it was too salty for this. Tomorrow I'll omit the salt from the watermelon, but it's still not quite going to work... because the supermarket was out of everything except some varieties of Doritos for tortilla chips. I should have got chilli heatwave, probably, but I randomly went tangy cheese. Which is also salty. This is a bad mix.

It looks good. The textures are still right and the watermelon's lovely with its dressing. But if you do make a version of it, learn from me. Use plain chips, or do without. I've been downing water all afternoon and I'm still parched. Tomorrow it's cheese *or* chips, and the reverse the day after.

*Look, I know things are "easing". But we're still not supposed to use public transport, which means my world is still limited to people within walking distance. Of my friends, that leaves one (1), and she has a young daughter who's shielding, who I can't imagine wants her first human contact in three months to be a mate of her mother's. The odd yoga acquaintance is around, and two people from work are bumpable into in supermarkets, but that's it. I still feel pretty locked down.

  1. Very few (if any) of my friends live within walking distance, and the ones I want to see most are on the far side of London. It certainly doesn't feel like much has changed in that respect!
